Fulminant amoebic colitis: the role of surgery and the operative approach

Fulminant amoebic colitis is rare and has a high mortality. The role of surgery in the management of this condition is examined using examples from two cases presenting one year apart at Ngwelezane Hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Both patients presented in an extremely unwell state with distended, peritonitic abdomens. Evidence from these cases confirms findings from others in the lite...

Comparative proteomic analysis of two Entamoeba histolytica strains with different virulence phenotypes identifies peroxiredoxin as an important component of amoebic virulence.

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan intestinal parasite that causes amoebic colitis and amoebic liver abscess. To identify virulence factors of E. histolytica, we first defined the phenotypes of two E. histolytica strains, HM-1:IMSS, the prototype virulent strain, and E. histolytica Rahman, a strain that was reportedly less virulent than HM-1:IMSS. We found that compared with HM-1:IMSS, Rahman...

Acute Amoebic Appendicitis: Case Reports and Review of Parasitic Appendicitis.

Amoebic appendicitis is very rare, occurring in about 0.5% to 2% of acute appendicitis, and usually not reported in children. We report a case of confirmed acute amoebic appendicitis complicating amoebic colitis in a 7-year-old Pakistani boy living in southern Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and briefly review the literature on parasitic appendicitis.

Fulminant necrotising amoebic colitis: A diagnostic conundrum.

Fulminant necrotising amoebic colitis is a complication of untreated amoebiasis. This is seen in mainly low-income countries. It has a high mortality rate and is difficult to diagnose. We present an extremely rare case of fulminant necrotising amoebic colitis that caused diagnostic confusion in mimicking an acute abdomen, presumably caused by a perforated duodenal ulcer.

Amoebic colitis mimicking a colonic carcinoma

Amoebic colitis is reportedly common with prevalence reported to be in the range of 9 to 50% population depending on geographic and socioeconomic location. Presentation varies from normal to fulminant colitis and therefore endoscopic and subsequently histopathological studies are essential for diagnosis. We present an interesting case of a gentleman undergoing investigations for recurrent anaemia.
